Spatial Reasoning

Piece it together, then picture it in 3D

The DAA's spatial reasoning section, in two parts run back to back. Part 1 is 2D shape assembly — join labelled pieces into the whole shape. Part 2 is 3D — match solid objects by their orientation using reference markers. It measures how accurately you can manipulate figures in your head, which weighs heavily for aircrew and technical roles.

Every section explained, how it's scored, and a study plan — all on one page.

What to expect

  • Part 1 — 2–3 flat pieces with edges labelled x / y; pick the shape they make.
  • Part 2 — two 3D objects with marker dots; pick the matching orientation.
  • Multiple-choice answers (A–E), timed, getting trickier as you go.

What it measures

  • Mentally joining flat pieces along matching edges
  • Reflecting a piece shown flipped
  • Judging the 3D orientation of solid objects
  • Holding a shape steady in your mind while you transform it

Instructions

  1. 1The two parts run straight through — Part 1 (2D) first, then Part 2 (3D).
  2. 2In Part 1, match edges by their labels (x to x, y to y) and flip any reflected piece.
  3. 3In Part 2, track the marker dots to keep each object the right way round.

Tips

  • In Part 1, watch for the mirror image — it's the most common trap.
  • Assemble around one fixed piece rather than moving everything at once.
  • In Part 2, use the markers as anchors before comparing the rest of the shape.
